The heart of a vintage instrument, with the looks of a modern guitar
The Silver Sky was the result of a clear mission statement: how do you create a guitar that sounds and feels like a 1963/1964 instrument, but with the reliability of a modern instrument and a contemporary aesthetic/appearance? The sum is now known: let John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith work together, then you know for sure that the result will be special and noteworthy. And that's exactly what the Silver Sky is. When you hold the guitar, you first notice the comfortable neck and characteristic fretboard radius. With its 7.25" radius, this guitar is completely vintage correct, and the moment you start playing you notice that this guitar is very inviting to play. Bends feel wonderfully smooth, high notes have a lot of sustain and the Silver Sky is a tight guitar, as befits an S-style guitar.
PRS through and through, and at the same time completely unique
The eye for detail with which this guitar has been manufactured is unique. At least, unique in the broader sense, because anyone who knows Paul Reed Smith guitars a little knows that the Quality Control and attention to the smallest details are top notch . Yet the Silver Sky easily distinguishes itself in the overwhelming PRS Guitars line-up. This is of course primarily due to the traditional pick-up configuration; SSS or three single coil elements. Where PRS normally focuses on manufacturing the very best humbuckers on the market, they have now chosen to design the ultimate 60's inspired single coil. The result of this search is the 635JM pickup. All three pickups in the Silver Sky are wound and spec'd identically, and the difference in sound you hear at the different positions is solely the location of the pickup on the body. In terms of character, these pickups are smooth and mellow, but effortlessly pierce through the mix without becoming ice picky . In addition, it was decided to place the Steel Tremolo bridge right on the wood of the body, making the guitar a bit louder acoustically. The consequence? You are less bothered by noise and buzz, a major disadvantage of most single coil pickups.
Dijkmans Music and the Neck of the Silver Sky...
Dijkmans Breda and Paul Reed Smith have a warm relationship. Our own Jan-Willem is present every year at the PRS Experience event in England where he selects the most unique models and tops. We were even involved in the design process of the Silver Sky! This is a nice anecdote: Mister Smith himself was looking for old guitars as a reference for the design of this John Mayer signature guitar, and Jan-Willem told about the Jazzmaster neck from 1962 that he had laying around. Paul was immediately interested and the neck was therefore included in the process. We think this is super cool, given the impact the guitar has had.
The Silver Sky is now also available with a maple fretboard!
Great news: the Silver Sky models with maple fretboard have finally arrived! Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer have listened to the public, and come up with a maple fingerboard Silver Sky and two brand new colors, Polar Blue and Midnight Rose. Super nice. Nice detail are the new bird inlays, which have a minimalist character with only the contours of the now world-famous birds. Otherwise, the Silver Sky is unchanged, and that's a good thing.
John Mayer signature Paul Reed Smith guitar gets four new colors (2019)
What an insanely cool news at Winter NAMM 2019! No less than four new colors for the PRS Silver Sky. Paul Reed Smith's John Mayer signature guitar was of course already a huge success, but after Mayer announced the four new colors on his Instagram, we couldn't help but predict that this guitar is going to be an even bigger hit. In addition to the four old finishes - Onyx, Frost, Tungsten and Horizon - the John Mayer signature will also be available in the following amazing colors from the second quarter of 2019: Orion Green , Dodgem Blue , Golden Mesa and Moc Sand . All these colors can now be pre-ordered via our site. We are also proud to announce that we are the first in Europe to receive the Moc Sand color! This is expected to be in March. The rest of the colors will arrive in our store in the second quarter of 2019.
